NV State Museum LV
Friends respond to museum’s new budget with 'Cover for COVID'

Campaign to 'Cover for COVID'

The Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas is in special need of Friends’ help! The Friends has a proposal to deal with the museum’s current situation. Since early March, the economics of the Museum have deteriorated due to impacts from the pandemic: These changes will affect the Museum for at least the next year.

The Museum can use the help and support of the Friends more than ever in this challenging time, to provide financial resources to assist staff in completing their mission, as well as to enhance offerings that are educational and entertaining to the public, many of whom are finan-cially distressed, as well. Because of the pandemic, Friends fundraising activities have been severely curtailed since early March. We are still holding monthly "Dine Out" benefit nights for revenue-sharing with restaurants, with modest success.

And we hope to resume customary events as soon as September, but we have already delayed four big revenue-earning events (A Taste of Red & White, Jubilee Revisited, Secrets of Tea and Barnes & Noble Book Fair). And we’ve had to eliminate our monthly raffles and sales of stationery, Nevada brooches and over-the-shoulder Friends tote bags.

In the process of moving our monthly meetings online for health safety, we also have missed many impromptu donations from our generous members and meeting attendees.

Our goal is not to build a big bank account but to spend every dollar we can to support Museum staff members in executing their mission. The Friends take pride that, in 2019, we spent about $20,000 of our $25,000 budget on projects for the Museum that included direct purchase of supplies for Museum use, as well as holding events to attract new-comers to the Museum and draw more return visitors. Thus, even though we know times may be tight for many, we are asking all Friends to consider expanding their donations, to help the Museum not just survive by thrive. Since we don’t anticipate any traditional fundraising activities until at least the autumn, we are initiating a three-prong campaign, Cover for COVID, to raise funds during the summer. The three prongs (described in depth below) are:

Friends 2020 gifts to museum, to date

As you know from members meetings and newsletters, the Friends have been able - through your generosity - to provide $3,000 out of our general fund for the purchase of items for the museum staff that were high priority, but not covered by the museum’s budget. Items acquired to date include:
  • Two new computers
  • New laser printer
  • Stereoscopic viewer
  • Shade canopy for outdoors
  • 12 up-to-date research/reference books
  • Hangers for Costume & Textiles Dept.
  • Miscellaneous supplies for classroom crafts
  • Personal protection equipment (single-use masks & sanitizer)

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

Museum Staff’s Wish List

The first prong of our summer campaign, 'Cover for COVID', is to assist and support the Museum by providing basic supplies that staff members needs to complete their jobs, and which don’t fit within the reduced FY2020 budget. Staff has requested the items below.

The Friends group is requesting – since our normal fundraising events and meetings have been cancelled for the past four months, which eliminated the usual revenue-generating activities – that members review the list and give what you can to help offset these expenses. Please donate any amount you feel comfortable with to our wish-list fund; or donate the full amount to cover one of the specific items below. Donations can be made online by clicking here, or by mailing a check to:

Commit to a Monthly Donation

The second prong in our summer campaign to support the Museum is to establish a pledge program. For this, members of the Friends who are willing and able can pledge a set monthly donation. We are not establishing a goal or minimum pledge, but are asking members to commit to a monthly donation amount that fits your budget. This will help the Friends maintain regular support of the Museum and ensure we have funds on hand to support events and cover critical needs as they occur. If you're interested, and can support the Friends on a longer term basis, you can set up a monthly donation online. Or you can print and fill out the pledge card below. Then, send it along with your first check to:

Joe Louis is next speaker's subject

At the next Friends general meeting on July 16, our guest will be George Joseph, the son-in-law of boxing great Joe Louis, who. He will talk about Louis as an athlete and as a man. Louis spent the last part of his life in Las Vegas. For a time he served as a host to high-rollers at Caesars Palace.

The meeting, which runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., will take place on Zoom. You will receive the Zoom access info one day before, on July 15 via email.

Friends Win Traveling Trunks Grant

The Friends board received word just before the deadline for this July newsletter that we won a grant for up to $10,000 from Clark County’s outside-agency grant program.

The county’s money source is the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

Friends committed to use the grant for the museum’s Traveling Trunks program, both for round-trip delivery to and from schools, as well as for possible expansion of the program.

Friends should learn the precise amount of our award within several weeks, according to the grant-award notice.

Museum Prepares to Put Out Its 'Welcome Again' Mat

By Sarah Hulme

The museum team continues to focus on re-opening activities and making the museum a safe place for people to return to, with increased cleaning, a 'one way' navigation around the galleries and safety shields at reception and in the store.

One major upgrade we have made is to open up the Las Vegas casino area - it will soon be much easier to appreciate the sheer wonder of the showgirl wall in all its glory!
Karen Feder, guest curator
Guest Curator Karan Feder, talks near the "showgirl" wall, which will display better with planned gallery changes.

In addition, we have also re-purposed a large display case, moved it to the front hallway and will be launching a brand new exhibit about 'The Art of Crafting' that we hope will appeal to everyone of every generation. It's coming soon!

As we move towards re-opening, we have recently been able to welcome back some of our volunteers. As you all know, volunteers have always been, and will always be, essential to our work to preserve Nevada's history and natural history - and we have missed everyone.

But due to space and computer restrictions we unfortunately cannot accommodate the same number of volunteers as we had before; at least not in the short term.

There will be, though, new Guest Services volunteer opportunities for the reception/welcome desk and in the museum store to help assist us with visitors going forward. So the volunteering options may be a little different.

We also appreciate that not everyone feels comfortable enough to resume volunteering - and we completely understand. If you do wish to return, then please contact your museum supervisor. Or if you are new to volunteering, please email Stacy Irvin (sirvin@nevadaculture.org).
